Instrumental Electronic Album Who-Z by Jackson Whalan Out Now

I just released an instrumental album called Who-Z. 9 tracks. All beats. No words.

Who-Z takes its name from something deeply personal: the nickname for Housatonic, Massachusetts — a small Berkshire village on the banks of the Housatonic River where I’ve maintained studios and made music throughout my life. Known locally as “Hoozy” or “Housie,” it’s the kind of place that stays with you.

The seeds of Who-Z were planted in Brooklyn in 2013–2014, when I was immersed in the underground electronic music scene.

Built in Ableton and textured with original field recordings from travels in India and live percussion, these songs carry both the energy of that era and the patience of letting the music breathe — some tracks evolved over the course of a decade, moving between Brooklyn, California, and the Berkshires before finding their final form.

I even played clarinet on some of these songs,  an instrument I grew up playing from a young age.

The album was completed with support from the @berkshire_taconic_cf Martha Boschen Porter Fund.

It was mixed by Grammy-winning producer and engineer John David , and mastered by Oli Jung — all at Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, NY.

Who-Z marks a deliberate return to electronic music and beats, stepping away from the rap, hip-hop, and pop releases that have defined so much of my recent output.

I’m currently at a pivotal creative moment in my career, and Who-Z is the clearest statement yet of where I’m heading. I hope you enjoy it.

You can stream Who-Z wherever you listen to music and/or support the project directly on my Bandcamp 🙂

Inspirations for these songs include Thievery Corporation, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Pretty Lights, Jade Cicada, Esseks, and many more.
